                     perennials.

         Special Materials and Equipment:  Supplemental Worksheet #1 and
                     reference text for plant classification (Sunset Western
                     Garden Book).

         Evaluation: Class exercise on classification.


TOPIC PRESENTATION:  CLASSIFICATION OF PLANTS BY LIFE CYCLE

I.  ANNUALS are plants which complete their life cycle in less than one
    year and must be planted again.  Examples include corn, wheat and annual
    flowers.

2.  BIENNIALS are plants which complete their cycle in less than 2 years but
    more than one year.  Energy stored by the plant during its first year
    is used in the reproductive phase during the second year. Examples are:
    celery, parsnip, sugar beets and asparagus.

3.  A PERENNIAL is a plant which continues to grow for more than two years.
    The plant continues to develop vegetatively during and after the
    reproductive phase.  Examples include: Bermuda Grass, all shrubs and
    trees.

              ACTIVITY:

              Ask the students to describe plants they have seen and
              speculate on how long they think they live.

              ACTIVITY:

              Generate a list of plants based on those around the school
              or at the student's homes.  Have the students group them
              into list of annuals, biennials and perennials.  Provide
              resources such as the Sunset Western Garden book to help
              classify the plants.  Use Supplemental Worksheet #1.
